Sofia is the capital of Bulgaria. Being a town with more than 7000 years of history, it is considered to be a place where for many centuries the traditions, customs and folklore of the nationalities, living on the Balkans have been preserved. In this town of almost 1000 000 inhabitants live and work fruitfully representatives of 60 ethnographic regions of Bulgaria.

All of them have created their own Cultural House,
Clubs, art collectives. In Sofia take place quite many events related to preservation of the folk art and traditions. One of the best and most appreciated ones is, in its second edition already, the folk festival Sofia Spring.

The founders of Sofia Spring festival are the Bulgarian National Cultural Houses Centre, Europe Foundation, Sofia Municipality. The festival is strongly supported by the Ministry of Culture, Bulgaria.

The official opening of the first edition of the festival took place on 23 April on the stage of the prestigious theater “ Laugh and Tears”.

The organizers of the festival Sofia Spring are: the Union of the Municipality of Sofia, Europe Foundation. The festival is organized with the cooperation on behalf of the Ministry of Culture in Bulgaria. The patron of the festival is the mayor of Sofia, General Boiko Borisov.

The  FIFTH INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL 2009 was opened on 02 May  2009.Unbelievable and miles- long parade decorated the streets of Sofia.

Opening the international celebration of songs, dances, folklore, all the participants from the art groups and the thousands of viewers were greeted by – the ambassador of Russia – Mr. Konstantin Vorontcov and Changé d’Affaires of Croatia Mr. Stanko Cmrečnjak

 

Yet the ancient capital of Bulgaria has been visited by so many amateur artists by now. Over thousand people performed songs, dances, music, folk and traditional clothes to the residents of Sofia.

After the obligatory performance on the stage of Sofia Theater, the folk groups presented their programs on an open stage in the city center.

Special interested represented the mummer groups, which are known to pursue the evil spirits by dancing in an unique ritual way.

The folklore groups were dancing, singing and performing traditional customs in the very centre of Sofia.

All groups were rewarded with honored diploma, statue and medal of the Festival by the president of “EUROPE” Foundation – Dr. Irina Yanakieva.

For three days the participants visited the sightseeing of Sofia city, and also made touring in The Rila Monastery, Plovdiv city, Pleven city, The Ledenica cave near the town of Vratca.

 

The Festival was highly supported by the Bulgarian National Radio, RF- radio, radio Signal Plus, newspaper “ Sofiiski Vestnik”.
